• Adjust tuner response speed for your pitch practice

We added a setting that allows you to adjust the tuner response speed in our Perfect Pitch Trainer.

You can set it to “slow”, “medium” or “fast”.

The “slow” option averages pitch over a longer time span. Use this option for vibrato singing or bowed string instruments. The “fast” option responds to pitch changes more quickly.

Hopefully this new setting will make your pitch practice even more enjoyable. 🙂

  • Perfect Pitch Test and Practice Modes

Since the very beginning our Perfect Pitch Trainer had two modes: test and practice. Let’s talk about these two.

    PRACTICE MODE

The perfect pitch practice mode just generates random single, double or triple notes for you to identify. It doesn’t keep track of the number of questions or correct answers.

In this mode you will see an option “Show notes right away”. If activated, you will see the notes on the virtual keyboard at the same time when you hear them. And it’s a good way to practice. This way your brain will connect visual and auditory information coming to you and will create what scientists call synesthesia. In other words, it will connect what you see and what you hear.

The above can be compared to language learning – when you listen to a recording of a native speaker talking and you see the transcript of what he or she is saying at the same time.

Eventually you may want to turn off the option “Show notes right away” to make your pitch practice more challenging.

    TEST MODE

In perfect pitch test mode the program is tracking the number of questions, including the number of correct answers. Obviously, during the test you are not able to see on the virtual keyboard which notes were played.

This mode can be somewhat more stressful for some people. So please don’t forget about the importance of mental state during your pitch practice. Remaining relaxed and comfortable is crucial and will guarantee you a quick progress.

  • More tuner settings for your pitch practice

Recently we released an update of the algorithm of our built-in tuner that should make your pitch practice easier.

In the past, the tuner picked up ANY sounds coming from your microphone, even if it was a noise or quiet sound.

The new version picks up only LOUD SUSTAINED sound and ignores the background noises. This is controlled by a slider to adjust the microphone sensitivity. If you move the slider to the left the tuner will ignore the background noises. You will also need to sing/play louder.

Another thing – now you can also set the minimum note length that would trigger the decision whether you sing the note correctly or not. Depending on your instrument or your voice control, you may want to set different values for correct and wrong answers.

Hopefully these new settings will make your pitch practice more enjoyable.

  • Set acceptable pitch variations for practice

We added a new setting in our tuner. Now when you do your pitch matching exercise using your microphone, you can set acceptable pitch variations. The possible values range from +/-5 to +/-40 cents. This setting is available in the section “Tuner settings”.

The program will not accept your correct answer unless you sing the note in tune within the accepted range.

With this setting you can tailor your practice with our perfect pitch trainer to your level.

If you are a beginner, you can start with:

    • longer notes (the setting “note length” is available under “Virtual instrument settings”),
    • wider pitch range, let’s say, +/-35 cents.

When you progress you can decrease the note length to 1 or even 0.5 seconds and make pitch variations range narrower, for example, +/-10 cents.

  • We translated the site into Swedish

We recently translated our website into Swedish.

Sweden brought us some very famous music artists, including ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, Avicii and Europe.

You may be surprised, but Sweden’s second largest export is music.

Hopefully our Perfect Pitch Trainer Online will help musicians from Sweden with their ear training.

  • We added the “transpose” option in pitch trainer

In case you play a transposing musical instrument, such as saxophone or clarinet, we have a good news for you.

We added an option in our Absolute Pitch Trainer that allows you to transpose notes.

Note that in the exercises for perfect pitch development we recommend starting with the notes F# and D#. Usually these notes are easier to identify for someone with untrained ear. These are concert pitch F# and D#. If you play a transposing instrument, you will need to figure out which note you should play in order to produce these sounds.

  • We translated the site in Italian

We are happy to announce that the site is now available in Italian.

Italy is the home country of many famous composers, including Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Antonio Vivaldi, Claudio Monteverdi.

If you like contemporary music, you probably know the following Italian musicians and singers: Adriano Celentano, Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Ennio Morricone, Toto Cotugno.

And obviously Italy is famous by its opera school.

Hopefully, our Absolute Pitch trainer will help musicians from this country with their ear and voice training.

  • Take perfect pitch test using your MIDI controller

Up until now you could interact with our perfect pitch trainer using your microphone, your mouse or tap the screen (in case of mobile devices).

We are adding a new option – now you can also answer the questions using a MIDI controller.

Just like with microphone, it can be a good practice if you want to learn to play by ear or improvise with other musicians.

For testing we used the digital piano Kawai ES110. If by any chance you have a different type of MIDI controller, such as breath-controlled or guitar-type device, please let us know if this option works for you.

  • Bass guitar fretboard – new virtual keyboard in our pitch trainer

Up until now our online perfect pitch trainer only had 2 virtual keyboards – piano and guitar fretboard. Today we are adding a new option – bass guitar fretboard.

If you play bass guitar yourself, we hope you will like this new addition! 🙂

In our collection of virtual instruments we already have 8 bass guitar sounds (2 fingered and 6 picked). If you want to download them on your computer here are the links: Pastabass, Unreal Instruments Multi Articulation Bass.

  • Perfect pitch test for multiple-note exercises

We are introducing the “test” mode for 2- and 3-note exercises, that is when you identify several notes played harmonically (at the same time).

This exercise is actually one of the first exercises recommended by David Lucas Burge in his Perfect Pitch Ear Training SuperCourse. He calls it “ear opening drill”.

Since our Perfect Pitch Trainer has a built-in tuner, you can perform this exercise exactly as recommended by David.

The program will play two randomly generated notes. If you are just a beginner, it is easier to start with major and minor thirds. Your goal is to first sing the bottom note, then the top note.

When you do your ear training in this way, we recommend unchecking the option “Wrong octave is considered as an error”.
